Stella D'oro by the Bag or the Case: Price per Ounce, per Cookie, and How Long They Keep

The same bag of cookies sells alone, in pairs, by the half dozen and by the dozen, and the price of an ounce moves a lot between those packs. A case pays only if you finish it while the cookies are still good.

Stella D'oro packs seen from above: Breakfast Treats, Swiss Fudge and Margherite

Nine Stella D'oro cookies make 24 packs between them: every bag alone, and most of them again in packs of 2, 4, 6, 12 and 16. The cookie inside is the same in every pack, but the price of an ounce is not.

Two numbers tell you whether a big pack is a good buy. The first is the price per ounce, set against the single bag. The second is time: how long it takes your house to eat through the pack, set against how long cookies keep.

Twelve bags of Stella D'oro Anisette Toast laid out in two rows on a linen tablecloth
A pack of twelve is a lot of cookies. It is also, for some bags, half the price per ounce.

One cookie, several packs

A pack here means a number of identical bags sold together. The bag never changes size: a 9 oz bag of Breakfast Treats is 9 oz whether it comes alone or with three more. Three numbers describe a pack: its total, the price of one bag inside it, and the price per ounce.

The two anise cookies show the pattern at its widest. A single bag of Anisette Toast is $11.89, and a single bag of Anisette Sponge $12.45. In the largest packs the same bags come to $5.50 and $5.67 each. The cookie and the bag are identical, and only the size of the order differs.

Almond Toast runs the other way. Its pack of 2 is the low point at 77¢ an ounce, and the pack of 12 costs more per ounce than a single bag. Twelve bags bought as six packs of 2 come to $60.78. The pack of 12 is $78.99, which is $18.21 more for the same cookies.

In the Cookies line the small order is usually the buy. For Swiss Fudge, Margherite and Lady Stella, the largest pack is the dearest way to pay for an ounce. Almond Delight is the exception: there the multi-pack cuts the price of a bag nearly in half.

The check is the same for any large pack: price the same number of bags in the cheapest small pack. For Margherite, the pack of 6 costs $57.99, and six bags bought one at a time come to $25.62. For Swiss Fudge, the pack of 16 costs $104.99, and 16 bags bought one at a time come to $91.52.

Roman Egg Biscuits come one way only, so there is nothing to weigh. It is a single bag at $12.49, or $1.04 an ounce.

Prices move, sometimes within a week, and a pack can sell out and return. The figures are those of our last update, 7 October 2026. The two lines are gathered under Breakfast & Coffee Treats and Cookies.

Does the bigger pack cost less? Sometimes

The usual rule says more bags, lower price per ounce. These packs follow it less than half the time. Of the 15 multi-packs on sale, seven cost less per ounce than the single bag of the same cookie, three cost the same, and five cost more.

The largest saving is on Anisette Sponge. Bought by the dozen, an ounce costs 93¢. In a single bag it costs $2.04, so the pack takes 54 percent off every ounce.

The rule fails hardest on Margherite. The pack of 6 works out at 81¢ an ounce against 36¢ for one bag: more than double.

In dollars the gap is plain. Twelve single bags of Anisette Sponge would cost $149.40. The pack of 12 costs $67.99, which leaves $81.41 in your pocket for the same cookies.

Taking the best pack of each cookie, the cheapest ounce in the catalog is Margherite at 36¢, and the dearest is Roman Egg Biscuits at $1.04. Buyers' Stella D'oro favorites, the bags with the most ratings, sit at the cheap end.

One bag of Stella D'oro Breakfast Treats beside a pack of four
One bag or four: the same biscuit, counted twelve to a bag.

An ounce is a fair unit for comparing packs of one cookie. Across cookies it misleads, because a Lady Stella cookie weighs under 9 grams and a Roman Egg Biscuit 31. The count on the label turns the price of a bag into the price of one piece.

By the piece, Margherite is the cheapest cookie at about 18¢, and Roman Egg Biscuits the dearest at $1.14. A dozen of the cheapest cookies cost less than two of the dearest.

For a daily habit the number to watch is the price of one label serving, whether that serving is a single biscuit or three small cookies. How those servings add up next to a cup is the subject of Stella D'oro and Coffee.

What the single bag costs you

On three cookies the single bag carries a heavy premium: Anisette Sponge, Anisette Toast and Almond Delight. One bag of Anisette Sponge costs $12.45. Inside the best pack, the same bag works out at $5.67.

Where one bag alone costs far more per ounce than the same bag in a pack.

Buyers notice the difference. Reviews of Margherite and Breakfast Treats call the price reasonable. Reviews of the anise cookies, Almond Delight and Roman Egg Biscuits call it high, and the same reviews say why people pay: the cookie is hard to find in their local stores.

What a bag costs in a store depends on where you live, and buyers quote different numbers. One reports $6 to $7 a box locally. Another advises buying whenever a bag is under $4. A third, in an older review, cites $2.79 printed on the package. None of these is a current shelf price. They show the range people measure an online price against.

    DELICIOUSLY THE BEST!

I have been buying these delicious anise toasts since I was kid growing up in Brooklyn, NY. They are difficult to find in the supermarkets and if they nare, they are place3d in areas difficult to find. So I just buy them from Amazon, although they've gone up in price, but worth it. For me, the best anise toasts are from Stella Doro, avery old brand. Their other products are all great tasting as well.

It's important to me that I can't find them in my Kansas City grocery stores. Why not?

I loved everything about them. I grew up out on the east coast and purchased them regularly, or rather my folks did. I miss having them readily available to me. They are delicious. I hate to think that I have to order them only on line if I want them. What's up with that? Any way they are as scrumptious as I remember.

    Biscotti's online

My wife likes Stella D'oro Anisette Toast biscotti's, but has had difficulty in locating them in local grocery stores as we travel through the summer. So we found them online and took a chance. They arrived in good condition and were dated as fresh ( dated to expire)for four months. If you like these, it can be a good way to obtain them.

biscotti should not be sent in an envelope.

The biscotti are delicious, but in this delivery they arrived all broken.

Prices also jump. One buyer watched a pack double in a week, and others write that a favorite suddenly got expensive. A price per ounce is true on the day you read it, so read it again on the day you order.

A single bag still makes sense in two cases. One is a first try: nobody should buy twelve bags of an anise cookie before tasting anise. The other is a soft cookie in a small household, where a case would outlast its freshness.

Some single bags carry no premium at all. Breakfast Treats and Margherite cost the same per ounce alone as in the multi-pack. With those, buy the number you will eat.

What is inside the biggest packs

A pack title gives a number of bags and stops there. The weight, the cookie count and the servings take a line of arithmetic each, and they change how a price looks.

The heaviest order in the catalog is the pack of 16 of Swiss Fudge: 128 ounces, or 8 lb, and about 288 cookies. At $104.99 it is also the largest single total in the catalog. Seen as cookies, that is 36¢ apiece.

Servings are the number to hold against your household: they say how many coffee breaks the box contains. Whether you get through them in time is the next question.

How long cookies keep

Every bag carries a date, and it is worth knowing what kind of date it is. The USDA puts it plainly:

A "Best if Used By/Before" date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, Food Product Dating, read 7 October 2026

The same USDA guidance explains who sets the date and why:

Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality.

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, Food Product Dating, read 7 October 2026

For a working range, the USDA FoodKeeper data lists packaged cookies in two rows, counted from the day of purchase:

Packaged cookies in USDA FoodKeeper data
TypePantry, from purchaseFreezer
Cookies, crispy4 to 6 months8 to 12 months
Cookies, soft2 to 3 months8 to 12 months

The data does not sort Stella D'oro bags into those rows. The toasts are crisp by any reading, and buyers call Breakfast Treats, Margherite and Almond Delight crunchy. Anisette Sponge is soft by name. Roman Egg Biscuits, Swiss Fudge and Lady Stella are harder to place, so they are given the shorter time.

One buyer of the sponge learned the difference the hard way. The bag arrived with months left before its date and was already stale. The buyer's own conclusion is worth keeping in mind: sponge does not keep that long.

Crisp cookies get four to six months in the pantry by USDA data, soft ones two to three.

Finishing the pack in time

Put the two halves together. Take the largest pack of each cookie, eat one label serving a day, and count the days. Then set that against the pantry time for its type.

Three packs run close to the limit or past it: Swiss Fudge, Anisette Sponge and Lady Stella. At one serving a day, one person does not finish them comfortably inside the pantry time. Two people can, and so can one person with a freezer.

Everything else finishes with room to spare, and a second eater halves every count of days. A buyer of Almond Delight ran this sum in a review: a dozen bags at two cookies a day, done before the date on the bag.

The times in the data run from the day of purchase, not from the day the bag was baked. The date printed on your bag outranks any general time.

A month of cookies for three households

The same sums work forward from the household. Take one label serving per person per day for 30 days, and buy whole packs at the lowest total that covers the month.

For one person, Breakfast Treats is the cheapest month of the three at $12.36. The totals do not simply double from row to row, because a larger household reaches the pack sizes with a better price per bag, or is pushed past them into a dearer one.

A case also splits. Twelve bags shared between two households is six each, and every count of days above halves. For the soft cookies that is the difference between finishing in time and not.

Opened bags and the freezer

FoodKeeper gives cookies 8 to 12 months in the freezer, crisp or soft alike. Against 4 to 6 months in the pantry for a crisp cookie and 2 to 3 months for a soft one, the freezer is the simplest way to make a case of twelve last.

Freezer first. With twelve bags of a soft cookie, keep two in the pantry and freeze the other ten on the day they arrive. Two bags of Anisette Sponge are about 14 days of coffee for one person.

Freeze bags whole and unopened, and take out one at a time. The data has no separate figure for an opened bag of cookies, so there is no official number to quote. What buyers do is close the bag tightly. One moves Breakfast Treats into a gallon storage bag and reports them fresh until the last biscuit.

Crispness is the thing to protect in a toast, and softness in the sponge. A toast left open goes harder, which one buyer does on purpose by leaving the lid ajar overnight. A sponge left open dries out, and nobody does that on purpose.

Six bags of Stella D'oro Almond Toast
Almond Toast by the half dozen. Freeze what you will not open this month.

Breakage: the cost nobody prices in

A bag of cookies is fragile, and reviews of every cookie in the catalog mention pieces. Some buyers count a fifth of a bag broken. Some open a box and find a few whole cookies in a bag of crumbs.

Nothing on a label predicts it. What the reviews do suggest is that a broken cookie matters more for some uses than others. A broken toast still dunks. A broken Lady Stella ring cannot go on a party plate. If the cookies are for guests, order a bag more than the count calls for.

Gifts raise the stakes. One buyer wanted the almond cookies as Christmas stocking stuffers for the grandchildren and gave up on the idea after too many arrived broken. For a gift you need the cookies whole.

One Almond Delight buyer has the right attitude and the last word: broken ones count as no calories and get eaten as a freebie.

Three ways to buy

  1. 1

Trying a cookie for the first time

Buy one bag, premium and all. With Anisette Toast that means $11.89 to learn whether you like anise.

  2. 2

One cup a day, one eater

A bag of Breakfast Treats lasts about 12 mornings. The pack of 4 covers about 48 days at 46¢ an ounce.

  3. 3

    A cookie you already love

Take the pack with the lowest price per ounce. For Anisette Sponge that is the pack of 12, at 93¢ an ounce in place of $2.04.

  4. 4

A soft cookie by the case

Freeze most of it. Twelve bags of Anisette Sponge take about 84 days to eat at a serving a day, against a pantry time of 2 to 3 months.

Short answers

Is it cheaper to buy Stella D'oro cookies in bulk?

Not always. Of the 15 Stella D'oro multi-packs on sale, 7 cost less per ounce than the single bag, 3 cost the same and 5 cost more. Anisette Sponge shows the largest saving: 93¢ an ounce in a pack of 12 against $2.04 for one bag.

How long do Stella D'oro cookies last?

USDA FoodKeeper data gives crisp packaged cookies 4 to 6 months in the pantry from purchase, and soft cookies 2 to 3 months. For Stella D'oro, go by the date printed on the bag first. It marks best quality, not safety.

Can you freeze Stella D'oro cookies?

Yes. USDA FoodKeeper data gives packaged cookies, crisp or soft, 8 to 12 months in the freezer. Freezing is how a 12-bag pack of Stella D'oro Anisette Sponge outlasts its shorter pantry time.

What is the cheapest Stella D'oro cookie per ounce?

Stella D'oro Margherite is the cheapest per ounce at 36¢, in the single bag. It is also the cheapest by the piece, about 18¢ a cookie.
